We had a very nice Father’s Day here in the Northeast. Despite a mid-day thunderstorm and torrential downpour, we got out and enjoyed God’s wonderful creation.
Pickiest-eater and I made Dad a cake for Father’s Day. She designed it and I did most of the work. It was so hot & humid on Saturday when we made the cake that I couldn’t keep the frosting from melting all over the place. It was looking like the wicked witch of the west. You know the scene…”I’m melting, melting…..” But #1 Dad loved it and pickiest-eater was excited to present it to him. We all enjoyed eating it!
Daughter-in-law and grandbaby came over in the morning (Son had to work) and we took #1 Dad out to breakfast. Afterwards, #1 Dad took a nap and the pickiest eater and I cleaned out the camper. Not-so-picky-eater was working, so we didn’t catch up with her until mid-afternoon, when we headed to Fort Knox to see them fire up the brick oven.
We walked around the Fort a bit, before arriving at the oven. My cohorts in exploration did some posing for me, even if it was only the back of a head. The Fort is one of our favorite places to be. I’ve loved this Fort since I was a little girl and I never tire of exploring the place. My kids seem to feel the same way.
The oven was quite the educational experience. We learned how the oven worked, what kinds of food they would have cooked in it and we got to sample some baked breads.
We also got a bit of education on the life of a civil war solider. They are having a reenactment in July that promises to be quite the event: battles at sea, burials at sea, a firing squad and lots of shooting with muskets. For more information you can read all about it at Battle at Fort Knox. We hope to make it there ourselves.
From there we went and got some dinner, then headed home. On our way home, we stopped at our beloved Masthead Campground. We spent many summers there and hubby & I even got married there. My oldest daughter explained it the best when she told her boyfriend “I literally grew up at this campground.”
We have many wonderful memories from our times there.
It was a bitter-sweet visit. The campground is now closed. The owner, our surrogate mother & grandmother, passed away 2 years ago from cancer and her children just don’t have the time or the resources to re-open it. One of her daughters was there on Sunday and we spent some time talking with her and reminiscing about our adventures there. I’m so glad that they are holding on to the property and that they let us visit occasionally.
So, this was a long post and I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about me and my family. We are getting ready this week for a camping trip, so I don’t anticipate posting again until we return. I’ll have another long post for you then!
Have a very blessed week and remember, God loves you all very much
What a nice day! Have fun camping.
